WHAT IS DEVELOPMENT?
Development is something that will never be “achieved” in the sense that all problems will be solved. But the “practice” of development is something that can be done to provide people with the opportunities and resources needed to pursue life without the burdens of oppression, hunger, disease, poverty or educational deprivation.
THE SUSTAINABLE ANSWER IS…
How to do this in a sustainable manner that reverberates across society and through generations is a question that will never have one answer. But for every one who desires to promote sustainable development, there is one guiding principle. The people we desire to help are the ones who know the most significant ways their problems can be addressed. They simply need to be given the voices to say so and resources to carry out their knowledge. Our role as people that have the desire and capacity to help, is to allocate needed resources in a beneficial manner. These resources can take shape in the form education, agricultural technology, business training, organizational capacity building and monetary gifting. Sometimes people may require help in gathering the resources to bring improvement to the areas they hope to develop, but our job as development practitioners is not to show people where they lack, but to show them all it is they have to offer and maximize on.

Royal Bhaktapur exists in order to provide voices and opportunities to families in Nepal, so that they can have the economic freedom they need to flourish in the areas of health, education, community improvement and familial harmony. We need to remember that there is no distinction between a person in a developed country and a person in a poor country. The only difference between these individuals is opportunity, and as individuals that have opportunity, we have an obligation of service to help others achieve beneficial opportunities as well. By working directly with local producers and entrepreneurs in Nepal, we’re able to contribute to the local economy and provide people with prospects to generate viable sources of income.
